Awali Inside Out
"Our inmate population, particularly the African American men in our facility, have been recommending the empowerment program to other inmates. The number of inmates who successfully complete all the classes continues to increase."
- Ron Bergee, Programs Manager, Ramsey County Correctional Facility
The annual cost to house an inmate for one year in Minnesota is $31,390. Within three years, two-thirds of all released prisoners are re-arrested, increasing costs to the state and affected families.
Launched in December 2004, Awali Inside Out focuses on helping men transition from incarceration to long-term living-wage employment, instead of following a path of recidivism. The program is currently working at Ramsey County Correctional Facility.
Awali Inside Out brings the Empowerment training from our Twin Cities RISE! curriculum to incarcerated men with less than 90 or more than 30 days left to serve on their sentences. Participants learn basic techniques that enable them to better control their lives and encourage feelings of self-worth and personal dignity. Upon their release, they transfer directly into the regular Awali Place program and continue empowerment and job training courses.
"[The program has helped me] to know that I have
worth and importance, that within me I can change how I think, see
myself. I'm confident about my future."
- Awali Inside Out Participant
